Expand bike path, clean eyesores

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion In the April 15 Gazette, Metroplex stated it wants to expand the bike path within the city to Riverside Park, which is an excellent idea and should be done. Everybody from visitor to resident would enjoy the new scenic bike path section along the Mohawk River. To go along with this fantastic idea, Metroplex should include beautifying the existing bike path within the city at two locations. The first location would be from the just-built pathway from the Rivers casino to the Stockade. As you leave Rivers to the Stockade, you vividly see an ugly industrial property on your left that needs to be hidden by trees. Further along, you ride by a Niagara Mohawk substation that will need a massive tree planting to make it less visually offensive. The second location runs parallel to Foster Avenue. It has an unobstructed view of the city garage, plus the adjacent city work area. This is an extremely ugly area (to put it nicely) that, for instance, will not attract residents from Niskayuna to venture downtown Schenectady via the bike path.Expanding and beautifying the existing bike path within the city limits fits nicely with the “live, work and play” motto Metroplex and city are trying to develop. To put it bluntly, everybody likes nice scenery — not eyesores. Nice things attract people.LEONARD DE MASISchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:Schenectady’s Lucas Rodriguez forging his own path in dance, theater, musicEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesSchenectady department heads: Budget cutbacks would further stress already-stretched departmentslast_img read more
