The North-South Highway, linking Kingston and Ocho Rios, is to be renamed in honor of former Prime Minister Edward Seaga.Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the announcement last week, at a ceremony to re-dedicate the Bustamante Museum in St. Andrew. Holness said the decision was made by his Cabinet on Monday. He said the rationale for naming the segment of the highway after Seaga includes the fact that the former Prime Minister was instrumental in the development plans for both Downtown Kingston and Ocho Rios. Since the Highway links both places it’s only fitting. However, the opposition People’s National Party (PNP), has hit out against the decision.Members of the party say Seaga was not instrumental in the building of the highway. They have suggested that the honor should have instead been bestowed on Former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

In a recent release by Jamaican recording artist, Jahmiel, he tackles worldwide social issues in a creative and profound manner. The newly released single titled “We Feel The Pain” lashes out at the constant injustice lower economic class of people face worldwide. The ‘Greatman’ continues to prove his growth as an artist turning his new work into a musical masterpiece highlighting the oppression of the less fortunate whether living in the ghetto, being of a minority or being of a lower socioeconomic class. Showing his frustration in the visuals and on the track, you hear and see Jahmiel passionately plea to the people that they are living in an open prison and their lives are not a priority to government. The world is like a open prison, cah we no have no freedom / Police kill a innocent youth Weh no strap, so dem give him gun / We know dem plan up fi rule and control everything/ Dem Nuh wah we Mek it out, dem Nuh wah Fi see we a win/ Yeah we see dem smile , but that no genuine/ Government no give a f### Bout our living/The single not only invites listeners to realize the struggles many face throughout the world, but Jahmiel also appeal for people to regain the power and awaken the power within themselves. The system nah no heart/ So me no wah you Tek dem serious when dem talk/ A better fi me and you that dem no win/ Cause when dem keep we down, a we dem profit offa/ No trust dem food youth a better you go plant/ Inject dem chemicals fi keep we lifespan short/ The people have the power so me wah you know that/Dem plans can’t work if me and you stop.In popular music today singing anything but a love song or about the monetary success in life sometimes constitute a risk. And tackling complex issues like class, race or the environment in a song can especially be a hard sell. Jahmiel taking this step in a time of intense debate, social issues driving the news cycle, presidential campaign, music that choose to take this direction is more vital than ever.Directed by Buss Weh films the video provides a heartfelt visual of global injustice to youths, minorities, police brutality, and social economic injustice. Jahmiel is seen with a rope around his neck and chains around his feet, symbolizing being enslaved, you also see various cutaways of worldwide events of people suffering, 9/11 and misuse of power. The ideological fuel that freedom isn’t free is one that many activists have been educating for a long time and for Jahmiel the message needs more voices. Yvette Clarke NEW YORK, CMC – Caribbean American Democratic Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke says the US House of Representatives has enough votes to impeach President Donald Trump, as efforts continue in the impeachment probe.“In all likelihood, we have the votes,” Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, told the Caribbean Media Corporation on Saturday, stating that 236 members of the House of Representatives have “indicated that they support the inquiry.”A simple majority vote by the full House of Representatives, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 235-198 (in addition to one independent and one vacant seat), would be required to impeach Trump, according to the US Constitution. At present, six US House of Representatives’ committees are probing Trump’s alleged misconduct that could result in impeachment. Clarke, the representative for the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York, said, while Democrats are confident of the votes to impeach Trump, they are going through the formality. “The committees have subpoenaed witnesses,” she said. “Then, it’ll (process) eventually move to the floor (for the vote on impeachment).“It’s a matter of building the case,” Clarke added. “We are making sure that the American people are fully informed (about Trump’s alleged wrongdoings).”If the House votes to impeach the president, the articles of impeachment go to the Senate for trial, at which the chief justice of the US Supreme Court presides, the US Constitution states. It says that two-thirds of the members of Senate are required to convict the president. If he’s convicted, he’s removed from office. However, Trump may have history on his side, because no previous impeachment inquiry has resulted in a conviction in the Senate. Former US presidents Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson were acquitted in the Senate. Former President Richard Nixon resigned before the House voted on impeachment.Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, on September 24, initiated an impeachment inquiry against President Trump in the wake of revelations that Trump and top administration officials had allegedly put pressure on leaders of foreign countries, primarily Ukraine, aimed at advancing the president’s personal interests.A whistleblower report, which has implicated Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph Giuliani and US Attorney General William Barr, has alleged widespread abuse of power and cover-up by Trump and his administration. The report also alleged that Trump and Giuliani pressured the Ukrainian Government to probe former US Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Joe Biden is among the leading Democratic candidates for the 2020 US Presidential Election.
Additionally, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States Audrey Marks says the embassy is working to assist“out-of-status” Jamaicans stuck in the U.S.“We’re actually asking persons who are in that situation to contact us at the embassy and we’re responding by e-mail to explain what they can do if you are potentially out of status”, Marks said at a recent digital town hall.“The USCIS and the embassy in Jamaica, they have assured us that they are prepared to work with persons because clearly they know that you’re not able to travel at this time.”Marks did, however, warn that Jamaicans must be able to prove that they made plans to leave the United States before the travel restriction to avoid cancellation of their visa.“It’s important that you show that you had made arrangements to leave by a certain time if your visa would have been up during this period, and if you’re in other situations where you need to apply for extension you’re encouraged to go ahead and still apply online. So we have a whole set of information to share for persons so that they know what they can do for their particular situation, whether they’re visitors or students or workers,” said Marks.According to the USCIS’ website, discretion is applied in the event of “natural catastrophes and other extreme situations”, which sometimes affect the processing of USCIS application, petition, or immigration request. It said when applying for an extension or change of status due to a special situation that prevented a planned and timely departure, “we may take into consideration how the special situation prevented your departure. If you do not apply for the extension or change of status before your authorised period of admission expires, we may excuse the delay if it was due to extraordinary circumstances beyond your control”.Marks said that it is critical that Jamaicans, who are out of status, or will soon be out of status, “send a note to the embassy so we can respond to you”.The ministry of foreign affairs has advised for all persons with queries to contact the Embassy or Consulate if you need help.WHERE TO APPLY FOr VISA EXTENSIONS:United States – https://www.uscis.gov/visit-united-states/extend-your-stayCanada – https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/extend-stay/apply.htmlUnited Kingdom – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for-uk-visa-applicants-and-temporary-uk-residentsEuropean Union – https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/coronavirus-what-to-do-if-you-get-stuck-in-the-eu/ KINGSTON, Jamaica – If you are a Jamaica that is currently stuck in the United States with an expired or almost expired visa due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, it is possible to get a visa extension.Hundreds of Jamaicans were left stranded in the United States and other countries after Jamaica closed its borders to incoming passenger flights on March 24.
